Video conferencing via IP address over the Internet is accomplished by using a special camera system or software that can digitally compress and decompress (CODEC) video and audio for fast and smooth transmission.
Further information may be obtained from MSU's
Emerging
Technologies Video Conferencing Sub Committee Report.
PolyCom and LifeSize Video
PolyCom video conferencing systems are permanently installed in Erickson Hall's rooms 128, 133D, E, F, and G,
and 252. IM Circle's room 217 has a system made by LifeSize. The College also has a mobile PolyCom unit for use with dedicated ISDN lines which are
installed in room 133F Erickson.
Codian MCU and Recording Units
The Codian Multi-Conferencing Unit (MCU) is a device that facilitates multipoint video
conference calls with up to 16 sites connected at once. The Codian can invite participants to a conference, or the participants can dial in themselves. Participants who do not have cameras can watch the call live by connecting to the Codian server and viewing streaming video of the call.
The Codian recording unit allows for playback of recorded calls at a later date. It can also be used to record meetings or classes held in the rooms in which PolyCom units are installed. Recorded sessions can be played back as streaming video from the Codian recorder's web site.
