About Broad Partnership

The Broad Partnership between Michigan State University College of Education and Detroit Public Schools is a collaborative endeavor to develop highly trained urban educators for service in the Detroit school system. The Broad Foundation has committed 6 million dollars in funding support for this initiative with a focus on high quality teacher recruitment and preparation. Ranked for ten years as the #1 provider of elementary and secondary education by US News & World Report, MSU has an exemplary teacher preparation program that features a fifth year hands-on teaching internship. This initiative presents an opportunity to increase the presence of highly qualified teachers in the Detroit Public Schools. The Broad Partnership between Michigan State University College of Education and Detroit Public Schools offers three distinct program opportunities:

Broad Summer High School Scholars Program - Targeting students entering the 11th and 12th grades from Detroit Public Schools, this is a three-week residential program on the campus of Michigan State University. Students will receive pre-college preparation and readiness experiences and in-depth academic skill development, all with a focus on a career in education.

Broad Future Teachers Award - Available only to graduates of the Detroit Public Schools who pursue a bacheloršs degree and teacher certification at Michigan State University. The award is a loan-forgiveness opportunity that provides financial support to cover the full cost of attendance (tuition, fees, room and board) at MSU's highly regarded College of Education. Students who are awarded this substantial funding opportunity agree, upon program completion, to serve in the Detroit Public School system or other approved setting. The loan portion of the financial package is forgiven at the rate of 1/3 for each year of teaching service.

Broad Summer Teaching Fellows - This summer fellowship opportunity is available to junior and senior standing teacher candidates at Michigan State University. Designed as a seven-week, immersion experience, fellows will work with the Detroit Public School Summer School Program. All fellows will be assigned a master teacher, engage in orientation and reflective seminars, as well as receive in-depth exposure to Detroit Public Schools, community and resources. While open to all MSU teacher candidates, preference will be given to those who originate from the Detroit Public Schools. Fellows are paid a total stipend of $3700.00 for this experience.
