Institutes and Centers

Over the decades, the college has been home to major research centers and institutes that have led to new understandings of teachers, teaching and student learning. Annual research in the college now totals more than $17 million in outside funding and provides many research assistantships for graduate students. Over half of the faculty in the college has funded research projects. The list of grants can be found on our website or annual report, but current key research and outreach centers and projects that make the college a dynamic place are described below.

Center for Curriculum Materials in Science
The Center for Curriculum Materials in Science (CCMS) is a partnership of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Michigan State University, Northwestern University, and the University of Michigan. It is focused on the analysis, design, and use of science curriculum materials, and is designed to prepare leaders in instructional and curriculum materials research and development in science. Center for Higher and Adult Education
The Center for Higher and Adult Education jointly emphasizes the importance of policy and international work in postsecondary education for the 21st century. We are indebted to the Dr. Mildred B. Erickson Distinguished Chair in Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education Endowment, established in 2003 by her son, Dr. Bruce Erickson, for providing us with start-up funds for this endeavor. Before retiring as Assistant Dean for Lifelong Education in 1981, Mildred Erickson spent her career helping non-traditional students, especially women, get back into college and to attain the self-respect and credibility that comes with an education. We are pleased to honor her legacy with our Center, research and commitment to enhancing lives through higher education. http://ed-web3.educ.msu.edu/halecenter/

Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning
The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) is a joint effort of Michigan State University, the University of Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania State University. The center's mission is to develop a national faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics committed to implementing and advancing effective teaching practices for diverse student audiences. As part of this effort, the CIRTL Professional Development Program will embed within a learning community opportunities for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty to develop teaching-as-research skills in classroom teaching, teaching with technology and teaching to diverse student audiences.

Center for Physical Activity and Health
The Center for Physical Activity and Health (CPAH) was established to study the effect of physical activity on human health and well being throughout the lifespan. The center, which is a collaboration between the departments of kinesiology and epidemiology, aims to position MSU as a leader for impacting the lives of Michigan and U.S. citizens in terms of appropriate physical activity intervention strategies. http://www.msu.edu/~cpah/index.htm

Center for the Scholarship of Teaching
From its inception, the Center for the Scholarship of Teaching (CST) has sought to find ways to support a community of scholars who want to study teaching practice and the student learning that comes from that practice. The center is designed to have local and practical impact, as well as contribute to the national dialogue about the scholarship of teaching. Four purposes stand out as central in fulfilling this mission: to engage in a set of activities meant to provide insight into how to improve teaching in the broader MSU community; to work toward establishing rigorous and alternative means for faculty review and promotion; to create more cross-college communication in order to engender teachers who are more knowledgeable in their subject areas; and to contribute to the national discourse concerning a scholarship of teaching - what it might look like, how it might be represented, disseminated and enhanced. http://www.educ.msu.edu/cst/

Center for Teaching and Technology
The Center for Teaching and Technology (CTT) in the College of Education has two primary goals: to provide support for faculty, staff and students in their effort to use technology to enhance their professional productivity and to conduct research about the use of technology in education. http://ott.educ.msu.edu/ctt/
