Ed.S. Coursework and Requirements
- Courses in School Psychology. Students complete several core courses in school psychology, including:
- professional issues in school psychology (CEP 884)
- intellectual assessment (CEP 880)
- personality/ social-emotional assessment (CEP 881)
- psyc assessment and intervention (CEP 886 )
- consultation (CEP 889)
- classroom management/discipline (CEP 883)
- behavior disorders (CEP 885)
- Ed Students with challenging behaviour(CEP828)
- school-based psychological interventions (CEP 918)
- All of the courses in this area have practicum experiences infused with the course requirements.
- Courses in Educational Psychology. Students are also expected to acquire important foundational knowledge in learning, development, research, measurement, and assessment. Required courses include:
- cognitive development (CEP 903)
- social/emotional development (CEP 904)
- Quantitative methods (CEP 932 or CEP 933)
- learning (CEP 902 or equivalent)
- Courses in Related Areas. Students also complete two electives, one of which must be selected from family offerings in the Department of Family and Child Ecology.
- Practicum and Internship. In addition to the course requirements and practicum experiences infused in selected, required courses, candidates for the specialist degree in School Psychology also complete 6 credits of Practicum (CEP 893K) across their second year and a 1200 hour Internship (CEP 894K) in approved settings. At least 600 of the 1200 Internship hours must be completed in a school setting.
- Comprehensive Exam. All students are required to pass a comprehensive examination administered according to department policy. This exam is case-based and covers principles of measurement, individual assessment, consultation, behavior disorders in children, educational disabilities, and interventions.
- Internship Requirement. Students are also required to complete a internship requirement of at least 6 credits for two consecutive semesters. All requirements must be completed within five calendar years from the time that the student first enrolls. Credit will not be allowed for courses taken more than five years prior to the granting of the degree.

Ph.D. Coursework and Requirements
- Psychological Foundations. To meet APA requirements, students must be grounded in the psychological research and theory relevant to the scientist-practitioner role. Thus, courses in the following areas are required:
- history and systems of psychology (CEP 805- History of Psychology)
- biological (PSY 851- Neuropsychology or PSY 852A Neuropsychological Assessment)
- Cognitive/affective bases of behavior (CEP 903- Cognitive Development across the Lifespan) OR Social bases of behavior (CEP 904- Social-Emotional Development across the Lifespan)
- Courses in the Professional Practice of School Psychology. Students complete several core courses in school psychology, including:
- professional issues in school psychology (CEP 884)
- intellectual assessment (CEP 880)
- personality/ social-emotional assessment (CEP 881)
- psychoeducational assessment and intervention (CEP 886)
- consultation (CEP 889)
- classroom management/discipline (CEP 883)
- behavior disorders (CEP 885)
- theories of child psychotherapy (CEP 888)or equivalent (e.g., PSY 954 Cognitive-Behavior Therapy or CEP 828 Ed Students/Challenging Beh)
- theories of school-based psychological interventions (CEP 918)
- ethics (CEP 963)
- current research and issues in school psychology (CEP 919)
- All of the courses in this area, with the exception of CEP 919, have practicum experiences infused with the course requirements.
- Research and Inquiry. Students are required to complete a series of courses in research methodology, including:
- Educational Inquiry (CEP 930)
- Quantitative Methods in Educational Research I (CEP 932)
- Quantitative Methods in Educational Research II (CEP 933)
- Multivariate Methods in Educational Research (CEP 934)
- Research Practicum/Apprenticeship (CEP 995)
- Optional: * Qualitative Methods in Educational Research (TE 931)
- Courses in Related Areas. Students also take an additional course in family issues from the Department of Family and Child Ecology.
- Practicum and Internship. In addition to the course requirements and practicum experiences infused in selected required courses, students also complete four semesters of practicum (CEP 893K, CEP 894K), one semester of advanced practicum (CEP 993K), and a year-long field-based internship of 2000 clock hours (CEP 994K). Students will also be given the option of completing additional semesters of Advanced Practicum (CEP994K) to satisfy internship prerequisites. All practicum and internship sites must be approved by the program. At least 600 of the 2000 Internship hours must be completed in a school setting. Note: Students entering the program with an Educational Specialist degree in school psychology must also satisfy this internship requirement.
- Dissertation credit requirements. Students must complete at least 24 credits of CEP 999 for the dissertation.
- The preliminary exam is designed to serve as an early assessment of competencies that are central to the students’ development as scientist-practitioners, including research, professional practice, and professional behavior. Doctoral students must satisfy the preliminary exam requirement, in one of 2 ways. The first option consists of a portfolio that includes a research article critique, first year course grades, and the first year Annual Review materials. The second option consists of a careful analysis of published research that is representative of research in School Psychology or related fields. Students are given a published research article, and in an in-class format prepare a written analysis of that research, guided by the attached set of questions
- Comprehensive Exam. All students take a comprehensive examination in their specialty areas usually during their fourth year administered according to department policy. This exam covers principles of assessment, consultation, intervention, behavior and psychological disorders in children, and professional/legal/ethical issues in school psychology.
- Internship Requirement. Students are also required to complete a internship requirement of at least 6 credits for two consecutive semesters. All requirements must be completed within five calendar years from the time that the student first enrolls. Credit will not be allowed for courses taken more than eight years prior to the granting of the degree.
