Faculty Awards

  • Beth Herbel-Eisenmann, assistant professor of teacher education, received the 2009 Early Career Award from the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE). This is a relatively new award, and Beth is only the second recipient. The award recognizes one early career AMTE member each year for their contributions as a mathematics teacher educator in the areas of teaching, service and scholarship.
  • Carrie Albin, outreach manager for the Educational Technology Certificate Program, and a team of faculty and staff members received first place for fully online courses (CEP 810: Teaching for Understanding with Computers) in the MSU Awards Competition in Instructional Technology, funded by AT&T.
  • Nell K. Duke, associate professor of teacher education and educational psychology, received the 2009 AERA Early Career Award during the American Educational Research Association’s Annual Meeting in San Diego. The honor recognizes a scholar’s distinguished portfolio of cumulative research within the first decade after receiving a doctoral degree.
  • University Distinguished Professors Jere Brophy and William Schmidt and professor emeritus Joe Byers were selected as inaugural fellows in the AERA Fellows Program, intended to recognize American Educational Research Association members who have made sustained, outstanding research contributions.
  • Associate professor of teacher education Angela Calabrese Barton was honored by Division G (Social Context of Education) of the American Educational Research Association with the 2009 Research Leading to the Transformation of the Social Contexts of Education Award.
  • Kenneth Frank, professor of measurement and quantitative methods, received a Fulbright Specialist grant to visit the University of Turku in Finland.
  • Associate professor of teacher education Elizabeth Heilman’s book, Reclaiming Education for Democracy: Thinking Beyond No Child Left Behind, received the 2009 Exemplary Research in Teaching and Teacher Education Award from Division K (Teaching and Teacher Education) of the American Educational Research Association.
  • John Metzler, who has an adjunct appointment in the Department of Teacher Education, received the 2009 MSU Award for Outstanding Service to Study Abroad.
  • Mark Reckase, professor of measurement and quantitative methods, received the Distinguished Faculty Award from Michigan State University.
  • Mark Reckase, professor of measurement and quantitative methods, and Suzanne Wilson, professor and chairperson of the Department of Teacher Education, were named University Distinguished Professors by Michigan State University.
  • Associate professor of special education Susan Peters was an invited speaker at the annual Education Summit of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • Gary A. Troia, associate professor of special education, was elected president-elect of the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division for Communicative Disabilities and Deafness.
  • University Distinguished Professor Yong Zhao received the 2009 Ralph H. Smuckler Award for Advancing International Studies and Programs, which recognizes faculty members who make an impact on international scholarship, teaching and public service at MSU.
  • Graphic designer Emily Brozovic and communications manager Nicole Geary received multiple honors in the 2009 ADDY Awards competition for creating the College of Education 2007-08 Annual Report. They include a Gold ADDY and the Best of Show award for the Lansing area and a Silver ADDY for the district (Michigan, Illinois and Indiana).
