Barbara Markle honored with Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA) Education Fellows Award

Barbara Markle, assistant dean for K-12 outreach at Michigan State University’s College of Education, will receive the Michigan Association of School Administrators (MAISA) Education Fellows Award. Markle will be honored at a June 21 luncheon during MAISA’s summer conference, held at the Doubletree Hotel in Bay City.

Gene Brown received an AT&T honorable mention Faculty award for his online course, KIN 856: Physical Bases of Coaching.

2005

Dr. Chandra Donnell was honored with the Bobbie Atkins Research Award. This award is named after Dr. Bobbie Atkins, a professor at San Diego State University who has been a leading educator, publisher, researcher and trainer, grant developer, and spokesperson on multicultural, gender and other issues in rehabilitation. Recipients of this award have distinguished themselves by the production of a significant volume of exemplary research and associated publications; the inclusion of research related to multiculturalism and disability; and the development of research, which has or will make a difference in thinking and/or practice in the multicultural arena.

Professor Mary Kennedy received the Margaret Lindsey Award for Distinguished Research in Teacher Education from the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education in February. The award recognizes an individual in mid-career whose research during the last decade has had a major impact on the field of teacher education.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has honored Professor Michael Pressley with the E.L. Thorndike Award for Distinguished Psychological Contributions to Education. He joins legendary figures such as Jean Piaget and B.F. Skinner as recipient of the award.

2004

Associate Professor Laura Apol (TE) won a 2004 Oklahoma Book Award for Crossing the Ladder of Sun.

Assistant Professor Reitumetse Mabokela (EAD) was awarded the George Bereday Award by the Comparative and International Education Society for the best article published in Comparative Education Review. She also co-edited Hear Our Voices! Race, gender and the status of black South African women in the academy (University of South Africa Press, 2004).
 
Assistant Professor Kavin Tsang (KIN) was selected first runner-up for the 2003 Journal of Athletic Training Kenneth L. Knight Award for Outstanding Research Manuscript in June. He received the award on June 18, 2004 at the National Athletic Training Association Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium.
 
Associate Professor Barbara Markle (Office of k-12 Outreach) received the National Leadership Award from the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, D.C.. (2004)
 
Professor of Distinction: University Distinguished Professor Jere Brophy added yet another honor to his list of achievements. In March, he traveled to Belgium to receive the Doctor Honoris Causa from the Universite' de Li`ege in Brussels.

2003

Susan Printy, assistant professor (EAD), received the 2002 Dissertation of the Year Award from Division A of the American Educational Research Association.
 
BetsAnn Smith, assistant professor (EAD), and her colleagues were honored with the Palmer O. Johnson Memorial Award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA). The award is given for an outstanding article appearing in an AERA-sponsored publication.
 
Yong Zhao, associate professor (CEPSE), received the Raymond B. Cattell Early Career Award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

2002

The E-Learning and Knowledge Management Web community, developed by Rhonda Egidio, professor (CEPSE), received the Rehabilitation Services Administration Commissioner's Award for Excellence in Education and Training. Egidio developed the Web site for the Michigan Department of Career Development-Rehabilitation Services.
 
Nell Duke, assistant professor (TE), was presented the Dina Feitelson Award by the International Reading Association. The award recognizes an outstanding empirical study that was published in English in a refereed journal and that reports on an investigation of aspects of literacy acquisition.
 
Michael Leahy received Award of Excellence. Presented at the Michigan Rehabilitation Conference in Traverse City, MI, November 7, 2002.

Gail Dummer, professor (kin), was selected as the 2002 Outstanding Coach for Area 8 Special Olympics. The award was presented in recognition of her leadership of the MSU Sports Skills Program, which serves 50-60 persons with disabilities from the Lansing area. Dr. Dummer was also honored with the 2001 Adapted Swimming Service Award from USA Swimming.
 
A book authored by Susan Florio-Ruane, professor (TE), Teacher Education and the Cultural Imagination: Autobiography, Conversation, and Narrative (Erlbaum, 2001), won the Edward B. Fry Outstanding Book Award from the National Reading Conference.
 
Pauline Hess, specialist emeritus, received the 2002 Spirit Contributor of the Year for Michigan Award from the National Federation Interscholastic Spirit Association.
 
Henry Montoye, professor emeritus (KIN), received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indiana University.
 
Susan Peters, associate professor (CEPSE), was honored by the Second City Conference on Disability Studies in Education for her scholarly contributions to the field of disability studies in education.
 
Professor Emeritus William Mehrens was honored with the E.F. Lindquist Award cosponsored by the American Educational Research Association and ACT, Inc. The award recognizes outstanding research in the field of testing and measurement that has the potential to affect educational outcomes. (2002)

2001

Nancy Crewe, professor (cepse), was awarded the 2001 Roger Barker Distinguished Career Award by the rehabilitation psychology division of the American Psychological Association (APA). The award recognizes outstanding lifetime contributions to the science of rehabilitation psychology.
 
John Narcy, associate professor (KIN) and MSU diving coach, was presented the Fred A. Cady Award at the 2001 U.S. National Outdoor Championships in August. The Professional Diving Coaches Association (PDCA) select the recipients for their outstanding coaching and years of service.
 
A book co-authored by Steve Ryan, assistant professor (TE), has won the 2001 Outstanding Book Award from the American Educational Research Association. The book is titled Becoming Good American Schools (Jossey-Bass, 2001).
 
A book edited by Gary Sykes, professor (TE/EAD), and Stanford University Professor Linda Darling-Hammond, Teaching as the Learning Profession (Jossey-Bass, 1999), won the Best Book Award from the National Staff Development Council.
 
BetsAnn Smith, assistant professor (EAD), received the Paula Silver Award for the best teaching case published in the most recent volume of Cases in International Administration from the University Council for Educational Administration.

Michael Leahy received George N. Wright Varsity Award. University of Wisconsin-Madison. Presented at the annual conference of the American Counseling Association in San Antonio, TX, March 17, 2001.

Michael Leahy received Distinguished Career Award. The Alliance for Rehabilitation Counseling. Presented at the annual conference in St. Louis, MO, October 27, 2001.

2000

Cleo Cherryholmes, professor (TE), was awarded the first honorary doctorate in education from Orebro University in Sweden. Cherryholmes received the honorary degree at a special awards ceremony in February.
 
Jay Featherstone, professor (TE), was listed as one of a hundred educators recognized by Education Week as having shaped education in the country during the last century.
 
John Haubenstricker, professor (KIN), was selected as Midwest Scholar of the Year 2000 by the Midwest District of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (aahperd). In addition to receiving the award, Dr. Haubenstricker also gave a presentation titled, "Physical growth and motor performance: What have we learned?" at the Midwest District aahperd convention in Chicago in February.
 
John Powell, assistant professor (KIN), has been awarded the William G. Clancy Jr. MD Medal for Distinguished Research in Athletic Training by the National Athletic Trainers Association Foundation. It is the highest scholarly award the association gives.
 
Chris Womack, assistant professor (KIN), was awarded the Young Investigator Award from the Life Fitness Academy. He also received the MSU Pearl J. Aldrich Faculty Research Award, and received a $10,000 grant from the American College of Sports Medicine Research Endowment to study "Hemostatic and Vascular Exercise Response in Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) Patients."
