1999
1. Lou Alonso, professor emeritus (CEPSE) was awarded the John O. Mullin Distinguished Service Award for leadership in the field of visually-impaired, deaf blindness and orientation and mobilityby the National Federation of the Blind.
2. Nell Duke, assistant professor (TE), received the 1999 Promising Researcher Award from the Standing Committee on Research of the National Council of Teachers of English.
3. Kinesiology adjunct professors Jeff Monroe and Sally Nogle received the Distinguished Athletic Trainer of the Year Award from the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society. Monroe also received the 1999 Service Award from the National Athletic Trainers Association.
4. Vern Seefeldt, professor emeritus (KIN) and former director of the Youth Sports Institute, was honored by the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education with the Clark W. Hetherington Award, the academy's highest honor. He was honored for his career commitment to children and youth in the context of movement, physical education and sport. Seefeldt also was honored by the United States Sports Academy with their Distinguished Service Award.
Michael Leahy received Exemplary Professional Service Award. Presented at the annual conference of the Alliance for Rehabilitation Counseling, Dallas, TX, March, 1999.
1998
1. Carole Ames, dean and professor (CEPSE), was recognized by her alma mater as the Purdue University School of Education Distinguished Education Alumni "Friend of Education" Award on April 3, 1998.
2. Ann Austin, associate professor (EAD), was named recently as one of the 40 Young Leaders of the Academy by the American Association of Higher Education and Change magazine. (1998)
3. Jeanne Foley, assistant professor (KIN), received the Senior Class Council Award for Outstanding Faculty member. (1998)
4. Linda Forrest, associate professor (CEPSE), was presented the Woman of the Year Award by the American Psychological Association's Division of Counseling Psychology. (1998)
5. Michael Leahy received Switzer Scholar Award. Presented at the 20 th annual meeting at the Switzer Memorial Seminar Series, East Lansing, MI, September, 1998.
6. Jim Gallagher, professor (TE), received the highest award presented by the National Association for Research in Science Teaching for his distinguished contributions to science education through research. (1998)
7. Gloria Kielbaso, co-director of the Michigan Center for Career and Technical Education (MCCTE), was selected as Boss of the Year by MSU’s Business Women’s Association. (1998)
8. Rob Rhoads, assistant professor (EAD), recently had a book published entitled Community Service and Higher Learning: Explorations of the Caring Self (1997, SUNY Press). In addition, Rhoads' book Coming Out in College (Bergin & Garvey, 1994) received the Gustavus Myers Award for the Study of Human Rights in North America. He also was recently awarded the "Outstanding Early Career Award" by the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) at the annual conference in Albuquerque, NM.
9. Vern Seefeldt, professor emeritus and former director of the Youth Sports Institute, was presented the Margie R. Hanson Award at the American Alliance of Human Performance, Exercise, Recreation, and Dance convention for his contribution to physical education for children.
1997
1. William Mehrens, professor (CEPSE), has received two awards. He received the National Council on Measurement in Education’s Award for Career Contributions to Educational Measurement. Mehrens was also the recipient of the 1997 University of Nebraska at Lincoln’s Teachers College "Alumni Association Award of Excellence." (1997)
2. Michael Leahy received Lifetime Rehabilitation Achievement Award. Presented at the annual meeting of the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification, Chicago, IL, June, 1997.
3. Michael Leahy received American Rehabilitation Counseling Association Professional Service Award. Presented at the annual convention of the American Counseling Association, Orlando, FL, April, 1997.
4. Laura Roehler, professor (TE), received the Amoco Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award for her long career and commitment to teaching.
5. Vern Seefeldt, former director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports and professor emeritus (PEES), received the President’s Award from Michigan Recreation and Park Association at its annual convention in Lansing in January.
6. Mun C. Tsang, professor (TE/EAD), has been awarded Honorary President for International Cooperation and Exchange by the National Association of Economics of Education Research, China.
1996
1. Lois Bader, professor (TE and CEPSE), was honored with the Jackman Award of Distinction at the University of Pennsylvania in June.
2. Jere Brophy, university distinguished professor (TE), received a Presidential Citation from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) for his contributions to the body of knowledge surrounding teaching and learning relationships. Brophy was instrumental in the founding of AERA's Invisible College, an organization that meets annually to discuss topics of current interest to the research community. Brophy returned to MSU in May from the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, where he had spent a sabbatical leave.
3. Nancy Crewe, professor (CEPSE), was elected the 1996 Jones Distinguished University Lecturer by the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence at Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas.
4. Crystal F. Branta, associate professor (PEES), received the Undergraduate Teaching Award sponsored by the MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan.
5. Herbert Rudman, professor emeritus (CEPSE), received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Education at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
6. Vern Seefeldt, professor emeritus PEES, has been named one of the Healthy American Fitness Leaders for 1996.
1995
1. Eugene W. Brown, associate professor (PEES) and Youth Sports Institute, was honored at East Lansing's Seventh Annual Crystal Award Reception, which recognized residents who have proven their leadership and commitment to the city.
2. Patricia Cianciolo, professor (TE), received the 1995 Arbuthnot Award of the International Reading Association (IRA) during the Book and Author Luncheon at the IRA convention in Anaheim, California, in May.
3. Louis F. Hekhuis, associate professor (EAD), was one of four to receive a Faculty Appreciation Award from the College's Graduate Student Organization.
4. Realizing New Learning for All Students: A Framework for the Professional Development of Kentucky Teachers, a document prepared for The Partnership for Kentucky School Reform by G. Williamson McDiarmid, National Center for Research on Teacher Learning (NCRTL) co-director and professor (TE), in collaboration with other NCRTL members, has been selected for special recognition by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) as the Outstanding Contribution Relating Research to Practice, Interpretive Scholarship category, for 1994. The award will be presented in April at the association's annual meeting in San Francisco.
5. Roger Niemeyer, associate professor emeritus (TE), was awarded a Distinguished Service Citation by the East Lansing Rotary Club for his contributions to the selection of and program development for Rotary International Scholars.
6. James Votruba, vice provost for university outreach and professor (EAD), was awarded the International Futures Award for Exceptional and Innovative Leadership in Continuing Higher Education. Given by the National University Continuing Education Association, the crystal ball-shaped award recognizes leadership in continuing education.
7. David Wong, assistant professor (TE &CEPSE), received an award from the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) for the best article of the year published in their journal, The Journal of Research in Science Teaching. The honor was given in Anaheim, CA, at the NARST annual convention.
8. Michael Leahy received American Counseling Association Research Award. Presented at the annual convention of the American Counseling Association, Denver, CO, April, 1995.

1. Michael Leahy received Rehabilitation Educator Researcher of the Year Award . Presented at the annual meeting of the National Council on Rehabilitation Education, St. Louis, MO, October, 1994.

1. Michael Leahy received American Rehabilitation Counseling Association 1993 Research Award. Presented at the annual meeting of the American Counseling Association, Minneapolis, MN, April, 1994.
2. Michael Leahy received National Rehabilitation Counseling Association and the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association Outstanding Leadership Award. Presented at the annual meeting of the National Rehabilitation Counseling Association in Atlanta, GA, October, 1993.
