2007-2008: Tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor Specializing in Prevention or Public Health

Department of Kinesiology

The Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University is seeking a behavioral scientist specializing in prevention or public health for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position. Candidates should have expertise in the area of physical activity intervention, which may also include exercise and sport settings. Experience with large intervention studies to improve physical activity behaviors leading to disease risk reduction is especially desirable.

It is expected that the person hired for this position will interface with ongoing Departmental efforts (e.g., the Center for Physical and Health, Institute for the Study of Youth Sports). Additional collaborations are available with the Medical Schools (in particular, the Department of Epidemiology) as well as the Michigan Department of Community Health, which is located in Lansing. The position is a 9-month appointment with the possibility of summer school teaching. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications. Effective date of appointment will be August 2008.

Qualifications: The applicant should have a terminal degree from a kinesiology, psychology, epidemiology, or public health program that emphasizes public health physical activity interventions. The successful candidate must (a) show evidence of scholarly expertise in physical activity behavior, (b) have research that has substantial potential for acquiring external funding, and (c) demonstrate proficiency in college teaching. Candidates at the associate professor level must have a record of federally funded grants.

Duties:

  • Develop and maintain a vigorous scholarly research program that will facilitate acquisition of external funding and enhance graduate student recruitment.
  • Seek and obtain external funding.
  • Possible teaching areas may include undergraduate and graduate classes in behavioral aspects of physical activity, social/cultural aspects of physical activity, measurement in kinesiology, physical growth and motor behavior, and research methods.
  • Recruit, advise, and mentor graduate students at the masters and doctoral levels.
  • Perform service to the department, college, university, and the profession.
