2007-2008: Open Rank Professor with Focus on Issues of Urban Education

The College of Education at Michigan State University seeks a scholar with a research focus on Urban Education. Research interests could include: the impact of high poverty on student learning, factors that contribute to the racial achievement gap, and school culture and its connection to teacher, student and family interactions. The scholar would conduct research and inquiry, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and collaborate with other faculty in program development and research projects. Activities in the first years of appointment would include work extending curriculum changes planned at Michigan State University. The scholar would participate in the College of Education’s urban educator program and work with faculty in other programs that reach out to urban settings in recruiting prospective students and preparing teachers and educational leaders to work in urban schools.

Candidates should have an established record of accomplishments in research, including, for senior scholars, leadership in funded research. Teaching is central to the mission of MSU’s College of Education and candidates should also have a commitment to and record of accomplished teaching. Candidates would have a primary appointment in one of the departments in the College of Education, with possible joint appointments in other departments as appropriate.

Major responsibilities include: 1) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; 2) conducting innovative, rigorous research; 3) advising master’s and doctoral students; 4) collaborating on program development; 5) contributing to intra-university or school-university partnerships regarding urban schools; and 6) collaborating with or mentoring other faculty.

Qualifications: An earned doctorate. A record of scholarly achievement in a field related to urban education. Strong interest in research and practice aimed at improving teaching and learning in urban schools. Evidence of a capacity to contribute to the intellectual, research, and instructional life of the College and the University. Evidence of leadership and teaching excellence. For senior scholars, evidence of leadership in funded research projects.
