What majors and minors are available through MSU’s Undergraduate Deaf Education Program?
- You will be a Special Education-Deaf Education Major. You are required to enroll with an integrated teaching major or two (2) minor areas. Major and minor areas are focused on preparing students to attain the Highly Qualified status that teachers are mandated to meet as well as the skills necessary for teachers of students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
What concentration areas are available through MSU's Undergraduate Deaf Education Program?
- Pending Michigan Department of Education approval, MSU Deaf Education undergraduate students will be able to choose from three (3) concentration areas.

What credentials will I have after I finish my program at MSU?

You will have a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Special Education-Deaf Education with elementary teaching certification (K-5 all subjects) and be able to teach grades 6-8 in your approved major/minor area(s). Additionally you will have a K-12 deaf education endorsement.
Do I have to complete a whole year of internship to work as a teacher?

Yes, the 5th year internship is a requirement at MSU. You will have a full semester of internship in a general education classroom followed by a full semester of internship in a deaf education setting.
What is the job market like for first a year teacher of the deaf?

We have alumni across the United States in placements ranging from elementary through high school self-contained classrooms, resource rooms, and itinerant/consulting positions. Teachers completing their year long internship at MSU enter the teaching field as well prepared individuals and are provided with ample resources to be competitive in today's job market. MSU's Teacher Preparation Program is well known by administrators around the nation and those individuals are eager to hire our graduates.
