Recipients must be doctoral students from across the College of Education interested in a scholarship of teaching, at the K-12 level or in higher education. The fellowship is intended to help the awardee establish a line of inquiry concerning the scholarship of teaching and learning in a particular subject matter. The awardee can choose to study his/her own teaching or that of other teachers and their students. The fellowship is renewable for up to three years, and provides the grantee with a 50% research assistantship and support for travel and research expenses. The awardee is expected to be an active participant in activities sponsored by the Center for the Scholarship of teaching, including pedagogical seminars for university faculty and staff, and the visiting speaker series.

About Marianne Amarel:
Marianne Amarel was an educator and scholar who advocated the teacher’s role in the creation of knowledge and the construction of curriculum. She was an officer of the American Educational Research Association, a member of the national advisory board of the Institute for Research on Teaching at Michigan State University, and a senior researcher with the National Center for Research on Teacher Education. She participated in the creation of the Holmes Group, serving as liaison to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Her papers are archived at MSU. The Marianne Amarel Memorial Lecture series was established in 1989 by Michigan State University, the Holmes Group, and family, friends, and colleagues of Marianne Amarel.
