Welcome
The Center for Higher and Adult Education emphasizes both the importance of policy and international work in post-secondary education for the 21st century. The Center aims to create an intellectual climate by supporting academic and cultural exchange at the postsecondary level as well as hosting forums dedicated to exploring the challenges and opportunities confronting higher education policy in today’s complex, global environment. In addition the Center assists the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education faculty and graduate students with their post-secondary research, teaching, and outreach related to higher education policy both domestically and across the globe.
Dr. Ma Wanhua, Peking University, Presents on Higher Education and U.S.-Sino Relations
On Tuesday, April 10, at 12:00 p.m., in Erickson 133F, Dr. Ma Wanhua will present on Higher Education and U.S.-Sino Relations as part of the Center for Higher and Adult Education’s Spring Visiting Scholars Brown Bag Series. Dr. Ma is a Full Professor and Director of the Center for International Higher Education, Graduate School of Education, at Peking University. She received her Masters and PhD from Cornell. She has been a Fulbright New Century Scholar, an Erasmus Mundus professor for the EU Commission, and received the DAAD Fellowship from German government. She has also participated in many international cooperative research projects sponsored by Ford Foundation, UNESCO, UNDP among others. Dr. Ma will be available for consultation April 9 – April 12. Dr. Timo Aarrevaara Presents on the Changing Academic Profession Survey
On Tuesday, April 3, Dr. Timo Aarrevaara of the University of Helsinki, reported on results from the Changing Academic Profession Survey, an international survey comparing the attitudes of faculty members to changes in the working conditions affecting the higher education sector around the world. Dr. Aarrevaara looked at the results from several European countries compared to data from the US. He presented results on number of permanent/tenured faculty, the distribution of tasks, and the level of internationalization among faculty members. His presentation manuscript is available here. Beat the Heat! Study in Finland!
The Center for Higher and Adult Education is sponsoring an International Comparative Higher Education course (EAD 972) to Finland this year. The course will introduce students to the mechanics of an evolving, ministry-based higher education system. Students will have opportunity to visit the Ministry of Finland, the Academy of Finland, three of the nations top universities, as well as a recent merger, a university of applied sciences, and the Finland Fulbright enter. Slides for Jussi Kivistö Presentation on Access and Equity in Finland
On Tuesday, March 13, Dr. Jussi Kivistö, Professor of Higher Education Administration at the University of Tampere, Finland, presented on questions of access and equity in the evolving Finnish higher education. His presentation gave an insiders view of the changing role of private and public funding in Finnish higher education and its implications for Finland's high rankings in access and equity.
