Stephen S. Kaagan has served since 1991 as Professor in the College
of Education at Michigan State University. Previously he was a chief
education officer (Vermont Education Commissioner, 1982-1988), academic
head of a higher education institution (Provost, Pratt Institute,
1977-1982), and chief executive of a non-profit educational organization
(President, Hurricane Island Outward Bound, 1989-1991). He has been
a classroom teacher (Arlington, Massachusetts and Canberra, Australia)
and has taught organization development and educational policy at
Pratt Institute, Rutgers University and the University of Southern
Maine.
Mr. Kaagan has a master's and doctorate from Harvard University and
a bachelor's from Williams College, as well as honorary doctorates
from Williams College and Green Mountain College.
He has consulted on team leadership development, strategic planning
and organization development with government, business and non-profit
organizations, and has written extensively on leadership, accountability
of public organizations and the essential role of the arts in education.
University Press of America published his first book entitled Leadership
Lessons: From a Life of Character and Purpose in Public Affairs in
1996. Sage Publications has just issued his second, Leadership Games:
Experiential Learning for Organizational Development.
