M.S. Concentration in Adapted Physical Activity
The adapted physical activity concentration is designed to prepare: (a) teachers to provide instruction to students with a disability in both regular education and special education settings; (b) coaches to include persons with a disability in recreational and competitive sports programs; and (c) leaders who plan to pursue doctoral study in adapted physical activity or related fields of study.
Many students in this concentration take advantage of a unique intercampus exchange program, the Michigan Intercollegiate Graduate Studies Program (MIGS), to complete courses at Eastern Michigan University as part of an informal joint degree program in adapted physical activity. Travel distance between the two campuses is 70 miles.
Degree Requirements
Students must complete all MSU and KIN requirements for the M.S. degree, including KIN 871-research methods, area of concentration, breadth requirement, and capstone (thesis, project, internship, or courses-only with certifying exam). The exact program of study is specified in an individual program plan approved by the student's guidance committee. Typical courses in the adapted physical activity concentration include:
- KIN 860 - Growth and Motor Behavior (3 credits)
- KIN 865 - Curriculum/Instruction in Adapted Physical Education (3 credits)
- KIN 866 - Research on Sports for Athletes with Disabilities (3 credits)
- KIN 867 - Practicum in Adapted Physical Activity (1-4 credits)
- KIN 890 - Independent Study in Kinesiology (1-6 credits)
The following courses at Eastern Michigan University are recommended:
- PHED 581 - Physical Education for Students with Disabilities (3 credits)
- PHED 583 - Teaching Effectiveness in Physical Education (3 credits)
- PHED 584 - Physical Education Curriculum and Instructional Design (3 credits)
Students in the adapted physical activity concentration often complete courses in areas of study such as special education, teacher education, rehabilitation counseling, psychology, school psychology, and recreation. Expectations
Expectations of KIN master's degree students are individualized because of the different concentrations offered within the department and the students' various educational goals. Commonalities in expectations of master's degree students include: (a) professional growth and involvement; (b) demonstrated ability to teach within the context of the student's chosen field; and (c) knowledge and skill as a consumer of research. Students who intend to pursue doctoral study or research careers are also expected to develop ability to plan, conduct, and disseminate research. Departmental expectations related to that goal are described in Expectations of M.S. Students, and related learning experiences are described in Professional Development Opportunities. These expectations are individualized for students during advising and guidance committee meetings.
