Physical Education Teacher Education Teacher Certification

A moratorium on admission to the Kinesiology teaching track (physical education teacher education) takes effect SS10 and discontinuation of the physical education teacher education (PETE) option has been requested through academic governance. Students currently in the program must complete their certification by SS14.

At Michigan State University, prospective teachers complete an undergraduate degree that includes selected teacher education courses, followed by a post-BA teacher certification program during which they complete a teaching internship as well as additional courses.

Undergraduate Study

Prospective physical education teachers complete the B.S. degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in physical education teacher education. The degree requirements include selected teacher education courses and courses associated with a teaching minor. KIN students are accommodated in the secondary education program.

Application to the Teacher Certification Program

Students are expected to apply to the teacher education program prior to their junior year of study. KIN students are accommodated in the secondary education program. Go to http://www.education.msu.edu/te/Secondary/Prospective-Students/Application-Admissions.asp for admission information.

Post-BA Teacher Certification Program

Students who complete the B.S. degree in kinesiology with a physical education teaching emphasis must continue in a 5th-year post-BA teacher certification program administered by MSU's Department of Teacher Education to become eligible for State of Michigan teacher certification (KIN students are assigned to the secondary team). Additional information about teacher certification requirements is provided in the MSU Academic Programs catalog. Students may also choose to complete the teacher certification requirements at another college or university.
