The College of Education Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary It has been a special year for the College of Education. The college officially turned 50 years old on July 1, and with this issue of the New Educator we conclude our yearlong celebration. The stories that follow in this special section bring to life some of the vibrant and innovative projects and initiatives that have been such integral part of the college’s rich history. The Marshall Plan, for example, was an ahead-of-its-time effort to engage teacher education students in the communities in which they taught, and it had a powerful impact on the nature of teacher preparation at Michigan State University. It would have been easy to overlook the Marshall Plan, for it ran for less than 10 years, but thanks to proud alums of the program, who alerted us to it, we are able to highlight it as part of the celebration of our past. We also highlight some of the wonderful events that made the anniversary year one to remember. Fifty Crystal Apples for 50 outstanding educators was certainly a highlight of the year, and we |
include in this special section the names of the 50 recipients and the donors who made those 50 Crystal Apples possible. From publishing a history of the college and commencement to Patriarch’s Day and the 50th Anniversary Gala and Crystal Apple Awards, it has been a year to remember. We hope you have enjoyed reading about the college’s history in the past few issues of the New Educator, and hope you will continue to take pride in the accomplishments of the institution in the years ahead.
