Students Honored at Commencement

Hundreds of students received degrees at the College of Education’s commencement ceremonies in May at the msu Auditorium. Sue Gutierrez (BA 92/MA 01), Michigan’s Teacher of the Year for 2002–2003, delivered the commencement address.

The college also hosted a convocation ceremony at Erickson Hall to recognize graduate students receiving their master’s, educational specialist and doctoral degrees.

At commencement, several seniors were recognized for special achievement. Five students received College of Education Scholastic Achievement Awards for having the highest grade-point averages in their respective programs.

The students were: Stephanie Anisko (kinesiology). Laura Carrion (biological science and secondary education), Jennifer Gifford (child development and teaching), Rachel Lynn Hasper (elementary education), and Deborah Ann Robinson (special education).
In addition, the college recognized Anna Mikko-Eicher (elementary education), who received the College of Education Service Award.

Student Briefing

Courtney Bell, a doctoral student in the Curriculum, Teaching and Educational Policy program, was awarded a $20,000 Spencer Dissertation Fellowship from the Spencer Foundation to support her the research.

Patty Farrell, doctoral student in the Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education program, received an Association for the Study of Higher Education– Lumina Foundation Fellowship for her dissertation research.T. Michelle Magyar, a doctoral student in kinesiology, received the Sport and Exercise Psychology Dissertation Award from the National Association of Sport and Physical Education.

Intern Anna Mikko-Eicher and special education senior Marliese Temme were awarded scholaships by the Kappa Delta Pi Foundation. Mikko-Eicher, who

majored in elementary education, received the Louisa A. Oriente Award and the kdp Counselor’s Award. Temme received the kdp President’s Scholarship.

Aaron Moffet, a doctoral student in kinesiology, was awarded a $20,000 grant from the u.s. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services.

 

Paul Nagelkirk, a doctoral student in kinesiology, received the Outstanding Student Research Award and the Outstanding Doctoral Student Presentation Award for 2002 from the Midwest American College of Sports Medicine.Linda Williams, a doctoral student in the Curriculum, Teaching and Educational Policy program, was awarded an msu Martin Luther King–Cesar Chavez–Rosa Parks Fellowship.


MSU Diver Earns National Honor

Kinesiology student Stephanie Anisko was one of 15 student-athletes to be named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America University Division Women’s At-Large First Team. It is just the second time in MSU women’s swimming and diving history that a member of the team was honored with the distinction.

Anisko, a diver from Mississauga, Ontario, won a combined 13 events for MSU last season on the 1- and 3-meter boards. She was awarded the Michigan State Student-Athlete Support Services President's Award, given annually to the student-athlete with the highest GPA. A three-time member of the swimming and diving program’s 100% Commitment Award, Anisko concluded her MSU career in May with her fourth appearance in the Big Ten Championships and her third appearance at the NCAA Diving Zones.

Members of the Academic All-America team are student-athletes who must be starters or important reserves and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Anisko also delivered the student address at the College of Education Commencement ceremonies in May.


Four Education Students Included in National 2003 "Who 's Who" List

Four College of Education students have been selected to the 2003 “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges,” a national honors recognition program.

The students are: Michael Holt of East Lansing, a graduate student in student affairs; Qiana Green of Grand Rapids, a graduate student in counseling; Kristen Janson of Pelkie, a senior majoring in elementary education; and Mark Forrest of Southfield, a graduate student in student affairs.

The program recognizes junior, senior, and graduate student campus leaders for their academic achievements, extra-curricular activities and for service to community and school. Students are nominated by faculty, administrators and the student body.


MSU Senior Class Council Honors Outstanding Seniors

In May, the MSU Senior Class Council recognized 24 students as outstanding seniors for 2002–03. One of those students was Erika Wells of Kalamazoo, a secondary education major in the College of Education and a biology major in the Lyman Briggs School in the College of Natural Science.

Wells was a member of the Student Alumni Association, representative to the dean’s student advisory council in the College of Natural Science, vice chairperson of Lyman Briggs student advisory council, a program mentor and tutor for the Lansing Public Schools, a residence hall mentor, and a teaching assistant.

Outstanding Senior Awards are presented to graduating seniors who have demonstrated exemplary academic and extracurricular successes and a strong sense of leadership, commitment, and dedication to MSU.
