From the President
College of Education

Alumni Association

In the midst of my second year as president of the College of Education Alumni Association, I am truly looking forward to a great 1999 for the association and the college. The main reason I agreed to serve a second year was because we have such an excellent board of directors, whose hard work and dedication has benefited alumni, the college and its students, and the exceptional support from Dean Carole Ames and her staff.

Alumni and friends of Michigan State University have much to he proud of especially those of us who have earned degrees from the College of Education. Many of our programs continue to be ranked as the best in the United States. In addition, Dean Ames and her staff have done an exemplary job of developing outstanding academic programs to prepare educators for the 21st Century.

One specific area that requires immediate attention is the membership campaign developed by MSU Alumni Association Executive Director Keith Williams and his staff. Apparently, membership in the MSU Alumni Association, which includes constituent association and regional clubs, ranks last among Big Ten universities. The goal that has been set by MSUAA for all college associations is a 50 percent increase in new memberships. I believe that this goal is attainable provided we aggressively network within our regions to promote the benefits of joining the MSU Alumni Association and our constituent association, the College of Education Alumni Association.

The benefits of membership are numerous. First and foremost, when you designate the College of Education as your constituent group, you become re-connected with your college and with its current students. We also use some of our membership dues to provide scholarships for students. Thus your membership is helping a new generation of MSU students realize their dreams of careers in education.

In addition, advantages of membership include:

  • Continued affiliation with a great university and top-ranked college
  • Subscription to the MSU Alumni Magazine and the New Educator
  • Insurance plans
  • Discounts for car rentals, hotel reservations, athletic events, campus parking, Spartan merchandise, student bookstore purchases, Kellogg Center activities, Forest Akers Golf Club green fees, etc.
  • Alumni Association Regional Club and Constituent Association special events
  • Basketball priority seating points
  • Wharton Center priority seating
  • Inside Newsletter, and more

If you currently are not a member of the Alumni Association (and the College of Education Alumni Association), please give serious consideration to joining. If you are a member, please network among your friends and colleagues to encourage membership.

I hope you find this issue of the New Educator interesting reading, and encourage you to provide Victor Inzunza, the magazine's managing editor, with any information on College of Education alumni who are making a difference in the world of education and outside of it. In the alumni section of the magazine, you will find many alumni listed for their recent accomplishments. News about alumni is always welcome, and we are eager to highlight their many accomplishments. You can reach Victor by email at inzunza@pilot. msu.edu or by telephone at (517) 355-182fi.

In closing, I want to remind you of our annual Technology Conference, co-sponsored by the College of Education and the Alumni Association, on Saturday, February 6, 1999. Evaluations and personal comments from past participants validate why this conference is so well attended. I look forward to seeing you there!

Have a great year.

Michael S. Shibler
