In Memoriam

Longtime College of Education Professor William “Bill” Farquhar of Williamston, Michigan, died February 1 after a battle with cancer. He was 73. Dr. Farquhar joined the faculty in 1956, only four years after the college was established. A counseling psychologist, he spent 29 years on the faculty of the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education, retiring in 1985.

Throughout his research career, he focused on educational motivation, and did consulting work with USAID in Indonesia, the Chicago Public Schools,

and the Mott Foundation and the Migrant Workers Project. He was also proud of the doctoral students whom he mentored, which included such people as Stanley Ikenberry, the former president of the University of Illinois and the American Council on Education.
