Graduate Student Honored
for Teaching
The Excellence-in-Teaching Citation is awarded to graduate teaching assistants who have distinguished themselves by the care they have given and the skill they have shown in meeting their classroom responsibilities. In honoring her, the university highlighted her dedication to providing high-quality instruction to educators. "The focus of her teaching and research is on secondary-level students with mild cognitive disabilities, a group that has become underserved in the public schools. Whether working with our newest undergraduates and seasoned M.A. candidates or developing the first doctoral student mentoring program in the Special Education Program at Michigan State University, Ms. Bouck has created inclusive learning communities. She is one of those rare teachers who combine high expectations with impeccable planning, creativity, and risk-taking, serving continually as a model for her students." DOCTORAL DEGREE

Makes with Holling Scholarship In combination with her MSU academic experiences, a new national
scholarship program will help enable her to repay those special teachers
by advancing her knowledge of science and taking it back to the
classroom--as a student and as a future educator. She is one of two MSU students and among 100 students nationwide to be selected for the award, which honors the retiring Democratic senator from South Carolina. "I not only want a solid understanding of the subject matter being taught, but also to learn to go beyond the constraints of traditional curriculum and encourage my students to challenge themselves," Cajiga wrote in her scholarship application essay. "It is important that I expand my leadership skills so I can pioneer new initiatives and approaches in the field of education, helping other teachers view students as individuals with potential and different interests and abilities." Cajiga's MSU and community activities include serving as a College of Education representative to the Associated Students of Michigan State University, working as a professorial assistant for the Teachers for a New Era initiative, and volunteering with several East Lansing-area organizations. She took part in a summer 2005 study abroad trip through Europe, working closely with experienced photographers to create photo journalism projects. "Science is often a neglected part of education in the United States," she said. "I want to ensure that I personally have an education that, among other things, will thoroughly prepare me to instill in students passion and excitement for the sciences and a sense of responsibility toward our planet." An MSU Mowbray Scholar and Academic Merit Scholarship recipient, Cajiga plans to pursue a graduate degree in educational administration after graduation from the university. In addition to Cajiga, MSU student Nicholas Gebauer of Fort Atkinson, Wis., a junior earth science major in the Lyman Briggs School of Science, was also selected as a Hollings Scholar. Student Awarded National Graduate Scholarship This new scholarship is designed to honor counselor education students at the doctoral and master's level who are preparing for roles in education and have demonstrated outstanding scholarship and volunteerism. Dorado was one of only 15 students selected to receive the scholarship.
The recipients receive a $1,000 scholarship and one-year membership to the
American Counseling Association. Interns Honored by
Education Network Five MSU students were honored by the Network of Michigan Educators as outstanding teaching interns. The MSU interns--Mitch Fowler, Benjamin Lorson, Katherine Taylor, Nancy Veltema, and Carnella Hughey--were honored at the network's third annual conference in December. The interns were among only 15 Michigan college students invited to attend the conference. The network represents more than 400 leading educators who have been recognized as Michigan Teacher of the Year, Milken National Educator Award, Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, National Board Certification, Christa McAuliffe Fellowship, Partnership for Success Partner Educators, National Science Foundation Einstein Fellows, Michigan Elementary-Middle School Principal of the Year, National Distinguished Principal, Michigan Secondary Principal of the Year, and Michigan Superintendent of the Year. Established in 2003, the network's mission is to enable and engage the
leading educators in advancing high achievement and excellence of Michigan
students and educators. Orlando Bound
