For decades, the MSU College of Education has made international education an important feature of its mission. Research and development projects have spanned the globe from Burundi and Zimbabwe to China and Thailand, from Mexico and Canada to England and Pakistan. Faculty have engaged in many kinds of international collaboration, ranging for example from developing and implementing a pioneering environmental education program in Thai primary schools to playing a leading role in a comparative mathematics and science study involving more than 40 nations

Despite the diversity of nations and projects, the main goals have remained the same: bolster the educational systems of developing countries, foster comparative research in order to improve schooling in the U.S. and elsewhere, and help internationalize American education.

To achieve these goals, our international education community is distinctive in that it draws on faculty from four departments in the College of Education, plus departments with international strengths across the university. Faculty in all four of the College's departments engage in international work. Our college also currently enrolls over 100 international graduate students, who add a richness and diversity to the college's academic life. Across the College, ongoing international special interest groups provide collaborative support for research and teaching among both faculty and students.

Many internationally-oriented graduate students from the U.S. and countries worldwide choose a degree program in one of the College©ˆs four departments. Within these degree programs, students complete the basic core courses and other common requirements of their programs, then focus their optional course work on international aspects of education and related disciplines. Working together with their advisors and taking into account their career plans, students design individualized programs that include courses offered within the College of Education, courses offered within other colleges at Michigan State University, appropriate international fieldwork/dissertation studies and other individualized learning experiences.

Graduates of our college with such international preparation may go on to careers in universities in the U.S. and other countries, educational research institutes, national ministries of education, donor agencies, and governmental and non-governmental organizations dealing with education.
