Motivation is an area of study open to graduate students in the Departments of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education and Kinesiology. Within CEPSE, these tend to be educational psychology doctoral students who plan to focus their scholarship on motivation of learners in classrooms or other educational settings (museums, training programs in business and industry, technology-based learning environments). Within kinesiology, these tend to be sports psychology masters and doctoral students who plan to focus their scholarship on motivation of physical education teachers, coaches, parents, and athletes in learning and performance contexts (recreational, interscholastic, and intercollegiate). Within both departments, students complete the basic core courses and other common requirements of their programs, then focus their optional course work on motivation. Working together with their advisors and taking into account their career plans, students design individualized programs that include courses offered within the College of Education, courses offered within other colleges at Michigan State University, and tutorial courses, apprenticeships, and other individualized learning experiences.
