| Few educational tasks are more important than helping to prepare the next generations of citizens of our nation and our world through social studies and history education. At MSU, graduate students may pursue this area of study at three levels. Through the Master of Arts in Teaching and Curriculum program, practicing teachers may strengthen their pedagogical and disciplinary knowledge by concentrating in professional courses in teaching and learning social studies, and by enrolling in graduate coursework in other academic departments, including history, sociology, economics, geography, and political science.
The educational specialist program in Curriculum, Instruction & Teacher Education is designed for those who wish to achieve additional proficiency in teaching and teacher education beyond the master's degree, but who do not intend to pursue a research-oriented doctorate. The program is primarily suited to individuals interested in extending their leadership roles in local and intermediate school districts, state agencies, or teacher education programs.
The doctoral program in Curriculum, Instruction & Teacher Education prepares curriculum leaders and scholars in the social studies and history education. While concentrating on social studies education, doctoral candidates will acquire broader knowledge about schooling, learning, and educational policy. They will graduate with distinguished research skills and the ability to shape the direction of social studies and history education at all levels of policy and practice.
