Admission:
Applications for admission to Michigan State University are available at high school and community college guidance offices or by writing to the Office of Admissions and Scholarships. MSU has a selective admissions policy and accepts only those whose credentials indicate probable success in the university. Academic grades, trend in those grades, quality of program, test scores (ACT or SAT), counselor comments are all used in making an individual decision for a freshman candidates. Basic considerations for evaluation of a transfer student include length of proper collegiate education, completion of basic courses, grades in prerequisites, and trend in grades. Transfer students who meet criteria for admission to MSU and who have sufficient credits may be directly admitted to the College of Education via a supplemental application process. Admission to the Teacher Certification Program:
Requires an application, usually submitted in the first semester of the sophomore year. Several hundred students are admitted to the elementary teacher certification program and to the various majors pursuing secondary certification.
Admission to the program is highly competitive since teacher education has limited enrollment. Students may reapply in their junior year if not admitted as a sophomore. To even be considered for admission to the program, students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 and have passed each portion of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification in Basic Skills. Currently the admission criteria include consideration of grade point average and score on a written composition. Students seeking elementary certification compete for the limited positions available in elementary education, which includes Special Education. Those seeking child development admission compete with other child development majors for limited spaces. Students seeking secondary certification compete within each of the majors in secondary education. In actuality, students with grade point averages well above the 2.75 minimum are admitted to the program, although all of the criteria for admission are weighted to rank order the applicants.
Teacher certification candidates are granted Michigan teaching certificates upon completion of all University and State of Michigan requirements. Michigan teaching certificates are accepted in many states and schools overseas. Recruiters from school districts throughout the nation and the world seek our graduates. Although most professional educators begin their careers in elementary and secondary schools, teaching can lead to many alternative occupations in policy making; college and university teaching and administration; government, business, industry, and school district administration; counseling; and professional associations.
