Undergraduate Programs and Teacher Certification

Improving educational opportunities for K-12 children and youth has been a long-standing priority of the College of Education. Over the years, the college has developed innovative programs of professional study that are based on research and experience in schools. Together with local school districts and several urban districts, the college has developed professional development schools, where university faculty and students work with teachers and parents to develop, test, and demonstrate to teaching and learning.

Outstanding faculty, close relationships with practicing teachers, strong research centers, and innovative teacher education programs make Michigan State University the right choice for learning to teach.

Teacher Preparation Program:
Provides teacher candidates with opportunities to gain the critical knowledge and skills needed to teach children effectively, especially those children who come to school less well-prepared than others for what school traditionally offers. MSU's College of Education in collaboration with departments in eight other MSU colleges, provides a wide range of teacher education options. Students who choose to prepare for a career in education complete a baccalaureate degree in a disciplinary major plus teaching certification follow by a full year internship. Students preparing to teach at the elementary level have the option of selecting either a disciplinary major or a major in the College of Education with two disciplinary minors. Students may select from more than 20 major and close to 30 minor fields.

The college also offers a Post-Baccalaureate program which leads to teacher certification and also provides opportunities for certified teachers to obtain additional endorsements and certificate renewals.

The Kinesiology Program:
Is committed to providing students with an understanding of the development, interpretation, application, and dissemination of knowledge in the anatomical, bio-chemical, physiological, sociological, and developmental aspects of physical activity and how it relates to human well being.

The department offers a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in kinesiology. Students who emerge from this program are capable of entry into (a) a teacher certification program, (b) graduate studies, or (c) professional programs such as athletic training, coaching, health/wellness promotion, community physical education, fitness leadership, and physical therapy.
