Duties/Requirements: Teaching Assistant must be an advanced doctoral student in School Psychology Program with experience and expertise in working with and understanding children, adolescents, families, and teachers who are challenged by child/adolescent mental health conditions. School-based and community-based work around these issues is required. Letter of application and a copy of applicant's vitae should be submitted no later than February 23, 2014.
Supervising Faculty: Dr. John S. Carlson
Provide an overview of the epidemiology, etiology, and diagnostic criteria and processes for psychological disorders observed within school-aged populations (child through adolescence), including academic and social characteristics in accordance with the current DSM.
Familiarize learners with the major diagnostic and classification systems used in the identification of childhood psychopathology, including the differences between behavioral and emotional disorders and other disabling conditions.
Provide opportunities for students to continue to refine their professional presentation and writing skills, supported by knowledge of consumer and professional organizations as well as familiarization with publications and journals relevant to the field of behavior disorders.
Emphasize the individual/group differences and the dynamics of human behavior associated with child psychopathology, particularly in light of the somewhat contradictory nature of current classification/diagnostic systems.
Highlight the educational impact and effects of dysfunctional behavior on learning, physical, and developmental problems and the role of DSM-IV in the schools.
Examine assessment, prevention, and treatment procedures for child psychopathology.
Familiarize learners with the theories of deviation, abnormal psychology and theory of maladjustment.
The TA will meet with the supervisor weekly prior to the start of the semester and then provide weekly check-ins to the supervisor during the duration of the summer course.
Mentoring and Monitoring:
Meetings will occur on a regular basis with the supervising faculty who will also observe one course meeting conducted by the TA .
Evaluation: Observation and SIRS reports. Evaluations will be done according to the Graduate Employees Union contract.
