Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC)
Candidates for Michigan teacher certification must pass tests designed by the State of Michigan to ensure that certified teachers have the necessary basic skills and content knowledge to perform effectively in Michigan schools. The competency exams are known as the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC). The required tests include:
The Basic Skills Test - This test must be taken and all subtests passed by all candidates for Michigan certification before being formally admitted to the certification program. The test includes sub-tests in reading, writing, and math. If one or more subtests is failed, the particular subtest(s) can be retaken. Michigan State University students are encouraged to take the Basic Skills Test during their freshmen year but the test should be taken no later than the fall of the sophomore year.
Subject Area Tests - Each teacher certification candidate must pass the MTTC examinations in the major and minor area(s) in which Michigan State University, College of Education will recommend the student for certification. Candidates for secondary teaching certification must pass the appropriate subject-area examination for each subject area in which they are to be certified. These exams will be in the teaching major and teaching minor. Candidates should consult the list of majors and minors to determine which test they should take for their major and minor areas. Secondary Education candidates must pass the subject tests in both the teaching major and minor in order to receive a secondary teaching certificate.
Elementary Education Test - Candidates for an elementary teaching certificate must pass the Elementary Education examination. This will qualify candidates to teach all subjects in grades K-5. Candidates for an elementary certificate may take the appropriate subject-area tests if they want to be certified to teach their subject-area major/minor(s), grades 6-8. Regardless of whether a student chooses to take the state exams to be certified in the subject area major/minors, they must complete the course requirements in the subject area major/minors to meet graduation requirements. Michigan State University elementary education students are encouraged to take the subject area tests so that they can be certified to teach their major/minors. The subject area tests can be taken during the Internship Year. The subject area tests must be passed prior to becoming certified by the State Department of Education. Michigan State University students are encouraged to take the subject area tests during the end of the senior year or just prior to the Internship. Candidates should verify with an advisor in Room 134 Erickson Hall which tests they should take for their major/minors.
MTTC Registration booklets are available on-line at www.mttc.nesinc.com. Information about test dates, costs, and registering for the tests is included in the on-line registration booklet. The booklet also includes sample questions and objectives for the Basic Skills Test. Test scores must be officially reported to Michigan State University.
