About Glenn and Thelma Buell
Although Glenn and Thelma Buell never attended Michigan State University, they made an endowment gift of more than $150,000 to benefit worthy and capable students enrolled in the College of Education. The Buell's did not have children but were interested in assisting students who wanted to improve themselves. Creating an endowed scholarship was their generous way of opening doors for future teachers.
Glenn James Buell was born in Lansing in 1902 and died in 1982. His wife Thelma Geraldine Buell (nee Lyon) was also born in 1902. She died 13 years after her husband. The Buell's were married in 1920 and watched MSU grow and improve in quality. Mr. Buell worked as an accountant at Reo Motors; Mrs. Buell was a secretary at Dudley Paper. In 1933, they moved to Detroit, where Mr. Buell worked for the R. H. Fyfe Company, the largest independent shoestore chain in the country at that time. In 1942, Mr. Buell was elected secretary and treasurer of the company.
According to their niece, Mr. and Mrs. Buell were modest and gracious people with an interest in education and young people.
The first scholarships from this significant endowment will be awarded in April 1997. Recipients of the Glenn and Thelma Buell Endowed Scholarship are students at the junior, senior, and post-baccalaureate teaching internship levels. This wonderful endowment gift will allow the college to attract and retain students of great ability and commitment to teaching.
