Application & Admissions Process

The Masters in Literacy Instruction program has been proposed for consolidation with Teacher Education's Masters in Teaching and Curriculum through academic governance. A moratorium on admission to the masters in literacy takes effect US10. Students interested in pursuing certification in reading will be able to do so through the Masters of Arts in Teaching and Curriculum.

Admissions deadlines:

March 31
July 1
November 31

Early Applications

Applications received prior to the March 31 deadline will receive notification of admission prior to the Summer semester. Applications received prior to the July 1 deadline will receive notification prior to the Fall semester. Applications received prior to the November 31 deadline will receive notification of admission to the Spring semester.

Materials to Submit With Application

Students should submit the following materials with their application:

  • Goal Statement: Goal statement should include why you want to be in the program and how it will help your professional career.
  • Transcripts: Please include official transcripts from all institutions previously attended except Michigan State University. Transcripts provide information about the applicant’s potential to participate fully in the academic coursework demands of the program.
  • Writing Sample: Please provide a sample of professional writing you have done in a course or work setting.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendations are required.  These should come from people who are able to attest to the your academic ability and potential for success in the program.
  • Resume: Please include an updated version of your resume.

Review of Application Materials

Following initial review by the admissions committee, student may be invited to interview with a Literacy faculty member.  Final admissions decisions will be made on a basis of knowledge available from the goal statement, transcripts, writing sample, letters of recommendation, resume and interview.
