Literacy Specializations and Endorsements

The Graduate Specialization in Literacy and Language Instruction, which is administered by the Department of Teacher Education, is designed for students who aspire to be scholars, curriculum developers, and policy leaders in literacy at school, district, state, national, and international levels. The specialization focuses on literacy theory, research, and education. It is for students who wish to address issues of language and literacy development, literacy use, literacy instruction, literacy contexts of social, cultural, and linguistic differences, and the possibilities of transforming how people read and take action in their worlds.

Column 1 represents a basic, 9-credit concentration in LIteracy in the MATC.

Columns 2 and 3 refer to options leading to the Graduate Specialization in Literacy and Language Instruction.

Qualifies for the State Classroom Reading Teacher Endorsement ("BT")*, the MSU "Graduate Specialization in Literacy and Language Instruction" and the MATC Concentration

Qualifies for the State Reading Specialist Endorsement (“BR”)**, the MSU “Graduate Specialization in Literacy and Language Instruction,” and the MATC concentration

** Final determination of certification is made at the state level involves a BR test.
† For students pursuing the Specialization or Specialist Routes, TE853 will fulfill the requirements of Public Acts 118 (2006) and 32 (2007).
