Do I need to register?
Yes, a registration application needs to be completed in advance and received by June 1. You can download a registration form below.

Can I register even if I cannot attend all five days of the institute?
We will accept your application however, if space is limited preference will be given to those who can attend all five days.

What costs are involved in participating in this institute?
There is no charge for participating in this institute. The only costs participants will incur are parking for each of the half days. We are able to offer the institute at no charge this year because of a grant from the College of Arts and Letters. Future institutes may require a registration fee.

How is the institute structured?
The institute is composed of five half-day sessions. Participants are expected to attend all sessions.
Daily Agenda:
8:15 - introduction, coffee, opportunity to network and explore teaching materials on display
8:30 - 10:00 - session I (see below for specific regions and topics)
10:00 -10:15 - coffee break
10:15-12:45 session II (see below for specific regions and topics)

What content
will be included in the institute?
This institute will explore the following topics and regions with particular attention to "reading" or critically examining how Latin America and Latin American-ness is represented and stereotypes may be reinforced in textbooks and curricular resources.

Who is leading the institute?
The institute coordinators are Dr. Rocio Quispe-Agnoli from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Kristin Janka Millar from the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Michigan State University. In addition, four professors from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Gabriela Alfaraz, Dr. Eduardo Guizar, Dr. Maria Mudrovcic, and Dr. Eve Zyzik will serve as guest lecturers for the institute.

Can I receive credit for participating in this summer institute?
Yes, if you attend all sessions, you can receive 2 SBCEU's. Attendance will be taken each day.
1 SBCEU = 10 contact hours
2 SBCEU's = 20 contact hours
1 graduate credit = 3 SBCEU credits
We are considering the possibility of organizing a follow-up seminar/institute during the academic year for additional SBU credits if there is enough interest. Participants attending all sessions will also receive a certificate.

Are meals included?
We will have coffee service available for all participants. In addition, the last day of the institute we will provide a lunch in the Kellogg Center on the MSU campus. If you choose to stay overnight in Owen Graduate Center on campus (approximately $40) you will receive a daily meal allowance of $8 as part of your accommodations. Please see lodging information below if you are interested in this option.

Location and Directions:
Location: All sessions will take place in Room 133F Erickson Hall, College of Education, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. Erickson Hall is the building immediately east of the International Center, near the Red Cedar River, Farm Lane and Shaw Lane.
Driving directions: Please note that there may be detours on campus due to summer construction.
From Traverse City or Points North via I-75: Proceed south on I-75 to US-127 near Grayling. Proceed south
on US-127 to East Lansing. Take the Trowbridge Road exit.
Follow Trowbridge Road east to Michigan State University.
From Detroit or Points East via I-96: Proceed west on I-96 to northbound US-127; follow US-127
north to East Lansing. Take the Trowbridge Road exit. Follow
Trowbridge Road east to Michigan State University.
From Grand Rapids or Points West via I-96: Proceed east on I-96 to eastbound I-69. Proceed east on I-69
to southbound US-127. Take US-127 south to East Lansing.

From Flint or Points East via I-69: Proceed southwest on I-69 to southbound US-127. Take US-127

From Jackson or Points South via US-127: Proceed north on US-127 to East Lansing. Take the Trowbridge
Road exit. Follow Trowbridge Road east to Michigan State

Parking: Park in the public parking lot on Shaw Lane (between Farm Lane and Red Cedar Rd., across from the International Center).
