June 18-22, 2007 (1-week) 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM Room 133-F Erickson Hall Michigan State University Free • Focus on Latin American/Hispanic culture • For K-12 and pre-service teachers • Hispanic cultures in many regions of Latin America • Led by MSU faculty (Department of Spanish & Portuguese) • Free teaching materials • Conducted in English • Meet other educators who teach Latin America • 2 CEU credits available Description: "Teaching Hispanic Cultures of the Americas" is a one-week, intensiveinstitute for twenty-five K-12 teachers and MSU interns aimed at broadening and deepening knowledge of and resources for teaching about cultures of the Americas. Sessions will focus on issues of ethnicity and class, language, religion, the arts, and gender in Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America and led by faculty from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. In particular, this institute will focus on "reading" or critically examining how Latin America and Latin American-ness is represented in textbooks and curricular resources. Teams or groups of educators from the same district are encouraged to participate (in particular, Spanish, social studies, world history and ESL teachers). 2 SBCEU credits are available.
