Fulbright Hays Group Program Abroad (GPA)
Cultural Diversity and Social Change in the Andean Highlands

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the departure date for this project?

If this project is funded, anticipated travel dates are July 6, 2007 through August 2, 2007.

2. I would love to go to Ecuador but I am a retired teacher, although I am still working as a substitute teacher. Am I eligible to apply?

No, the Fulbright Hays GPA is designed for active K-12 teachers, 4-H Youthe Development staff with MSUE and MSU graduate students in the field of education. As the goal of FH GPA is to increase the internationalization of curriculum, applicants must be educators who are currently teaching and who have not already significantly internationalized their curriculum drawing on the Andean countries, materials or experiences.

3. I've already participated in a Fulbright-Hays Group Program Abroad. Am I eligible to participate in the Ecuador trip? If not, do you know how long I must wait to apply again?

According to the U.S. Department of Education, three summers must pass prior to being eligible to participate in another Fulbright-Hays GPA.

4. I was wondering how much money will this cost in flight, food, lodging, etc.

The proposal budget as submitted to the U.S. Department of Education stipulates that each participant pays $650 towards airfare. They are also responsible for personal purchases. If the award of the grant is less than requested, the amount participants pay may have to be increased, but all efforts will be made to keep the cost low.

5. Could you please tell me if you recommend that participants take anti-malaria pills?

The decision to take anti-malaria drugs is one to make with your doctor. Here is what the Travel Online Clinic says about malaria in Ecuador. For more information go to the MSU travel clinic web site: http://travelclinic.msu.edu/ .
