Cultural Diversity and Social Change in the Andean Highlands

Selection Criteria

Before applying, participants should consider...

* FH GPA participants will be visiting and hiking in areas that are hot and humid and areas of high altitude. Applicants should be able to handle these physically challenging activities.

* FH GPA participants will be required to attend pre-trip orientation and post-trip meetings. The pre-trip orientation will be held on a Friday and Saturday in early June 2007. The post-trip meeting dates will be in January or February, 2008 - the exact date will be selected by participants.

Participant Requirements:

    • Each participant will contribute $650 toward the price of airfare.
    • Participants will create a series of lesson plans or a curriculum unit relating to the trip for their classroom and for web publication.
    • Participants must be U.S. citizen, natural or permanent resident and have a current U.S. passport.
    • Be either a teacher in elementary or secondary school in the areas of social science or the humanities, or 4-H Extension Educators in Michigan, or a graduate student who plan a teaching career in the modern foreign languages or area studies, or an experienced educator responsible for planning, coordinating, or supervising programs in modern foreign languages, or area studies at the elementary or secondary level.

Selection Criteria:

Participants will be selected based on their letters of recommendation and the following criteria as expressed in their application essay:

    • Commitment to the enrichment of language, cultural and area-specific dimensions of education;
    • Potential for developing internationalized curriculum units or lesson plans;
    • Potential impact on students' or 4-H members' ability to think globally;
    • Potential contribution to the group's overseas experience;
    • Potential contribution to other participants' ability to internationalize curriculum through various means such as website development, in-service talks and team teaching.

In addition to the above criteria, 4-H Extension Educators must also meet the additional criteria:

    • Be a full-time 4-H Professional Development staff; and
    • Demonstrate that the majority of their time is spent within educational areas mandated by U.S. Department of Education -- social sciences and humanities (see application for more detail.)
