Getting started with e-mail

When you begin your career as a doctoral student, you will have the pleasure of entering many new conversations. One effective way to become an active part of a discourse community is to learn how to exchange electronic mail with other e-mail users at MSU and on the Internet. As a new student at MSU, you have been assigned an e-mail account called a "Pilot account" because that is the name of the computers through which you will exchange your e-mail. If you have sent your green registration slip in with your tuition, your pilot account should be ready for you to use - all you have to do is activate it. If you haven't sent those things in, the following procedures will work when you do.

NOTE: In order to activate your account, you will need your student ID number, your PID and your PAN.

Directions for activating your e-mail account from the Mac labs in Erickson 132 and 133:

1. Open (double click) the icon for EH-server if it is not already open.

2. Open (double click) the Communications folder on EH-Server.

3. Open the Telnet application - either one will do.

4. Pull down the File menu and click on Open Connection.

5. Enter session name: pilot.msu.edu

6. Enter pilot at the login prompt.

7. Press Return (Enter) at the password: prompt.

8. Read the screen carefully and enter your student ID, PID and PAN when prompted.

9. A pilot ID will be created and you will set a password. Your new e-mail address will be your PilotID@pilot.msu.edu.
