Connecting to the MSU Network from off-campus

In order to access the MSU Network from off-campus, you need the following:

• A PC/Windows or Macintosh computer
• A modem, preferably 28,800 BPS (You can use 14,400 BPS but it's very slow!)
• TCP/IP software: for the Macintosh, MacTCP or Open Transport; for the PC/Windows,
• Trumpet Winsock or similar software
• A phone line to which your modem is connected
• Other software you want to use, such as TelNet, Netscape, Eudora, etc.

• Start up your TCP/IP program and have it dail the local MichNet phone number: 353-3500, or call the Computer Center to find out if there is a MichNet phone number in your area.
• When you connect to the MichNet system, you will be prompted withthe bolded text below and you should type the information below followed by a carriage return [RETURN]:

  You have reached MichNet.
  You must follow the MichNet Acceptable Use Policy.
  Enter a domain name, MENU, or HELP.

  host: ppp
  login: UserName@pilot.msu.edu [your Pilot e-mail name]
  Password: Password [your Pilot password]

• After this, you should see something about an assigned IP address, usually of the form, 35.9.10.34 (or similar). When you see this, you are dialed into the MichNet system and you can start up your other application - TelNet, Netscape, Eurdora, etc.
• When you are done using MichNet, disconnect the phone and hang up!
