Ask any youth sport coach today "What's your biggest challenge?" and among the top three most likely responses is "parents." The issues range from arguing about playing time to offering unsolicited coaching advice to the most noticeable of all: displaying loud inappropriate behavior during competition directed at coaches, players, officials, and even other parents.

The next entry in the ASEP Successful Coaching Webinar Series "Making Parents Part of Your Team" deals with parent-related issues, specifically how coaches and youth sport administrators can effectively work to engage parents to influence positive behavior. Led by Dr. Larry Lauer, Director of Coaching Education and Development at Michigan State University, the Webinar will address a variety of topics including the following:

  • The importance of having coaches define, establish, and communicate a coaching philosophy to parents.
  • Setting, managing, and communicating expectations for parent behavior.
  • Defining and enforcing consequences of bad behavior.
  • Facilitating ongoing dialogue with parents throughout the season.
  • Defining roles for parents during the season to make them part of the team.

This free Webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, November 17, 1:00 to 2:00 pm ET. While the discussion will be of interest to sport administrators and coaches at all levels of sport, the primary audience for the Webinar is youth sport administrators and coaches; those with participants ages 13 and under. Register now! If you're unable to make the live event, the Webinar will be recorded for viewing at a later date. Watch the ASEP Web site for details.
