Lundeberg Appointed Department Chair

Widely regarded scholar and administrator Mary Lundeberg became professor and chairperson of the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University in August.
“Mary Lundeberg is a great addition to the College of Education,” said Dean Carole Ames. “She brings an outstanding record as a researcher and scholar. Her work in the fields of educational technology and science education has been innovative, important and highly regarded. Her leadership and experience will play a vital role in our efforts to prepare the next generation of k–12 teachers and scholars.”

Lundeberg had been a professor at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls since 1989, and served as chairperson of the Department of Teacher Education there from 1992 to 1995. She has a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree in reading education from the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse, and a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The author of 45 articles and book chapters and three books, Lundeberg has extensive research experience in learning and cognition with a particular focus on what and how students learn from technology projects. She has been the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on grants totaling more than $2.2 million. She is currently working on a National Science Foundation-funded project involving development of case-based learning tools for the biology curriculum.

In 1994, Dr. Lundeberg was recognized as Teacher Educator of the Year by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and in 2000 she was honored as Outstanding Faculty Member in the College of Education at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls. In addition, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) presented her with the Best Practice Award for the Innovative Use of Technology in 1999.

“The Department of Teacher Education at msu is an exciting and collaborative community with outstanding faculty who care deeply about teacher education and partnerships with schools,” Lundeberg said. “The university has a nationally recognized tradition of innovation in leading the country in new directions. I am honored to join the faculty.

“This is a difficult and critical period in teacher education given the state budget crises and lack of understanding regarding the complexity and mission of teacher education programs. I think msu is well positioned to make a difference in teacher education on a national level, given its faculty, the strong reputation of its teacher education program, and the focus on preparing teachers to foster deep understanding of subject matter.”
