Alumni News Michael Bitar (EdS'79) is the new superintendent of the Beech Grove School District in Indiana. Bitar had been superintendent of the Battle Creek Public Schools since 1988.

David Hales (BA'84, MA'92) was elected president of the Michigan Council for the Social Studies for the 1999-2000 term. Hales is an assistant principal in the Farmington Public schools, and is a former member of the COE Alumni Association Board of Directors. Gunnard Johnson (BA'66, MA'69) has become superintendent of the Lakewood Public Schools in Michigan. Johnson had been principal of Haslett High School in the Lansing area since 1988. Barbara J. Keene (MA'80) was elected to the Clayton School District Board of Education in April. She is a performance analyst at the Center for Business, Industry and Labor at St. Louis Community College. Marjory Kay Philp (BA'66) was selected as the Miller Brewing Company Chair for Teaching Excellence in American Studies in the Fort Worth (Texas) Independent School District. Philp was one of nine Fort Worth teachers who received the honorary teaching chair title for her high academic standards and inspiration and motivational efforts at Paschal High School.
