Michael Bitar (EdS'79) is the new superintendent of the Beech Grove School District in Indiana. Bitar had been superintendent of the Battle Creek Public Schools since 1988.

Tom Bartol (MA'78) has been appointed superintendent of the Concord Community Schools in Michigan.

Joella Cogan < Joella Cogan (BA'74), who is head student advisor in the College of Education, received the 1999 Outstanding Advisor Certificate of Merit by the National Academic Advising Association (nacada). The certificate was presented to Cogan for her outstanding student advising. The association annually honors individuals and institutions for making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising. Cogan is the second advisor to received recognition from nacada in recent years. In 1997, Lynn Forsblom (MA'83) received the association's Outstanding Advisor Award.

Helen Godfrey< Helen Godfrey (PhD '71) retired in July as assistant chancellor for student affairs at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. During her tenure at the university, Godfrey served in a variety of roles including associate dean of students and assistant chancellor for university relations.

David Hales (BA'84, MA'92) was elected president of the Michigan Council for the Social Studies for the 1999-2000 term. Hales is an assistant principal in the Farmington Public schools, and is a former member of the COE Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Gunnard Johnson (BA'66, MA'69) has become superintendent of the Lakewood Public Schools in Michigan. Johnson had been principal of Haslett High School in the Lansing area since 1988.

Barbara J. Keene (MA'80) was elected to the Clayton School District Board of Education in April. She is a performance analyst at the Center for Business, Industry and Labor at St. Louis Community College.

Marjory Kay Philp (BA'66) was selected as the Miller Brewing Company Chair for Teaching Excellence in American Studies in the Fort Worth (Texas) Independent School District. Philp was one of nine Fort Worth teachers who received the honorary teaching chair title for her high academic standards and inspiration and motivational efforts at Paschal High School.

Cindy Carr Rodrigues< Cindy Carr Rodrigues (MA'91) has been hired as an admissions officer at Eastern Michigan University.

Robert Scheik (MA'83) has been appointed principal of Columbia Central High School in Michigan.

Barbara Vallieu (BA'68, MA'82) is the new principal at Brooklyn Elementary School in Michigan.
