COE Report

The photograph was taken by intern Colleen Connell last summer while in South Africa as part of the six-week pre-internship summer experience for students sponsored by the College of Education and the Office of Study Abroad. Connell and other members of MSU's Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), the education honor society, used the image as part of their presentation on fundraising, service and learning at the KDP National Conference in November.

NEW LOOK FOR WEB SITE

The College of Education's Web site has a new look. Webmaster and graphic designer Smita Sawai redesigned the home page, which also now includes a new look and a link to a new development site. The development page contains information about donor groups and how to give to the college. The college home page also includes a link to the alumni site, where you can purchase College of Education memorabilia and merchandise and nominate someone for a distinguished alumni award. Check it out at www.educ.MSU.edu .

RENOWNED RESEARCHER

Associate Professor Nell Duke of the Department of Teacher Education has been actively engaged in research on the literacy development of young children, particularly those living in urban poverty. And now Duke has added quite a distinction to her already accomplished career: the 2003 National Reading Conference Early Career Award for Significant Contributions to Literacy Research and Education. Duke received the award at the organization's annual conference in December.

THE NUMBERS

The College of Education has some of the nation's top graduate programs, drawing students from throughout the country and the world. In the 2003- 2004 academic year, the college has 1,376 full- and part-time graduate students. By the way, the undergraduate program enrolls more than 2,000 students.

SUZANNE WILSON'S BOOK GETS RAVE REVIEWS

Teacher Education Professor Suzanne Wilson's new book, California Dreaming: Reforming Mathematics Education (Yale University Press, 2003), has been making news. Reviews have lauded Wilson's detailed and insightful analysis of mathematics reform as it has played out in California. One review in Notices of the American Mathematical Society states that "Wilson is equally critical of zealots on both sides of the Math Wars. Despite having 'strongly held' opinions of her own, she aims at and, I believe, hits 'the middle ground'. This book is then a tour de force that merits reading by anyone interested in the Math Wars, even including Californians, almost all of whom . . . would learn something about math education in their state from this book."

JOHN DIBIAGGIO BACK ON CAMPUS

Former MSU President John DiBiaggio visited the College of Education in November to deliver the keynote speech at the Ewigleben Policy Seminar. DiBiaggio, who retired as president of Tufts University in 2001, was the second speaker in the series established by College of Education alumnus Robert Ewigleben, who served as president of Ferris State University. In the fall, James Duderstadt, former president of the University of Michigan, addressed faculty and students about the future of higher education.
